Chapter 32
"Then, do you want Uncle Du to be your father?" Du Wei asked softly.
"Yes, Uncle Du. If I become your son, will you teach me how to hunt?" Xiao Zihao asked quietly.
"Ah, you want to learn how to hunt? You're still young, but I'll teach you when you're older." Du Wei agreed.
Li Suniang saw how patient Du Wei was with Xiao Zihao and felt a sense of relief. Although she had already agreed to marry him, and he had already given her the betrothal gifts, she was still worried that she might have made a mistake. But now, it seemed that everything was going to be okay.
She knew that marriage required mutual understanding and tolerance to work, not just guessing and playing games. The wedding would take place in a month, and Li Suniang felt that this was just right. She needed time to adjust her mindset, and if it were too soon, she would be too nervous.
Du Wei, on the other hand, was eager to marry Li Suniang. He had finally found his wife, but he still had to wait a little longer. Lao Du, however, was calm and thought that this was for the best. He had time to renovate the house and prepare for the wedding.
Li Suniang was surprised to learn that the traditional betrothal gifts included many things, from food, clothing, and daily necessities to silver coins, covering all aspects of life.
Soon, the news of Du Wei and Li Suniang's engagement spread throughout the village, and the village became lively again. Old Liu Shi was the most vocal, saying, "I told you that the widow was a fox spirit! Otherwise, how could Du Wei, that fierce and evil boy, fall for her?"
But Du Wei and Li Suniang didn't care about the villagers' gossip. After all, they couldn't go around silencing everyone.
Li Suniang had been thinking about something, and she decided to take Xiao Zihao to visit Niu Da's grave before her remarriage. She wanted to pay her respects and inform him of her decision to remarry.
So, on a sunny day, Li Suniang and Xiao Zihao set out with a basket of food, paper money, and wine. The villagers' graves were located on a mountain behind the village, whereas Du Wei usually hunted on a different mountain.
The atmosphere was somber, and neither of them spoke much on the way. Even Xiao Zihao, who usually loved to talk, was quiet.
Li Suniang had left Wangzai at home, not wanting to encounter any supernatural entities that dogs might sense. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
They soon arrived at Niu Da's grave, and Li Suniang began to clean the tombstone and surrounding area. She then took out the wine and food from the basket and arranged them in front of the tombstone.
Next, she said to Xiao Zihao, "Xiao Zihao, pay your respects to your father."
Xiao Zihao knelt and kowtowed several times. Afterward, he remained silent for a while, looking at his father's tombstone before standing up.
"Go ahead, don't go too far. I need to talk to your father for a bit," Li Suniang said softly to Xiao Zihao.
After Xiao Zihao began playing nearby, Li Suniang started burning incense and spoke to Niu Da's tombstone: "Niu Da, I'm sorry to disturb you today. I hope you and your wife are reunited. I know you've been gone for a long time, and I'm sure you're together now.
You've seen Xiao Zihao; he's a good boy and very obedient. I like him a lot. Please don't worry; I'll take care of him as his mother. I hope you'll bless him with good health and safety.
I came today to tell you that I'll be remarrying soon, to Du Wei from our village. He's a good person and treats Xiao Zihao well. Don't worry; I won't change Xiao Zihao's surname. Every year during Qingming and Winter Solstice, I'll bring him to pay his respects to you."
Li Suniang spoke her mind, almost saying whatever came to her thoughts. Finally, she said, "I wish you both a happy reunion in the afterlife, a loving marriage that lasts an eternity."
After finishing her words, she scattered the remaining incense and wine in front of the tombstone. Then, she gathered her belongings, checked to ensure no fire hazards, and called Xiao Zihao to pay his respects again before they left.
Perhaps releasing her emotions at the tombstone made Li Suniang feel lighter. Even Xiao Zihao seemed more talkative than before.
"Mother, it's Uncle Du!" Xiao Zihao exclaimed, pointing at Du Wei approaching them.
Du Wei soon arrived, and Xiao Zihao ran to him, calling out "Uncle Du!" Du Wei picked him up and replied, "Ah." Then, he greeted Li Suniang, took the basket from her, and walked alongside her down the mountain.
"How did you know we were here?" Li Suniang asked with a smile, surprised by Du Wei's arrival.
"I went to your house and didn't see anyone, so I asked Aunt Yang, and she told me you were here," Du Wei replied.
Du Wei felt excited to be close to Li Suniang, and he thought to himself that he was grateful to Niu Da for bringing her to their village. He didn't feel the need to compete with a dead man, especially since he would be the one spending his life with Li Suniang.
"I came to bid farewell to Niu Da and tell him I'm remarrying," Li Suniang said gently to Du Wei.
Li Suniang believed in being open and honest, even before their marriage.
Du Wei nodded in agreement, feeling happy inside.'Oh, my wife is explaining to me! It seems that I am also very important in my wife's heart.'
Since the two walked side by side, and Du Wei's nose was more sensitive, he could always smell a faint, feminine fragrance coming from Li Suniang, which was very nice.
He was very distracted and moved by the smell. To prevent Li Suniang next to him from noticing his abnormality, Du Wei had to continue to find topics.
"Well, the autumn harvest is about to start. Are you going to pay someone to harvest the land or harvest it yourself?"
"Aunt Yang said she would help me harvest it together. I thought I would give her some food when the time comes." Li Suniang replied and told Du Wei her thoughts.
"Then I will come to help at that time, don't give her food. I will go to the mountains to get a few more wild animals and give them to her family when the time comes!" Du Wei suggested.
Li Suniang thought about it and it was okay. Anyway, the two of them were already in that kind of relationship now, and being polite would seem too unfamiliar.
So she nodded and said, "Okay then!"
Soon the three of them arrived at Li Suniang's house. Du Wei was no longer shy now, and he walked in directly with Xiao Zihao in his arms. Li Suniang didn't think there was anything wrong with it. She was not a virgin, and she didn't have to be cautious after getting engaged.
After Du Wei put Xiao Zihao down, he began to find some work that he could help with, such as chopping wood or other heavy and physical work.
At noon, Li Suniang cooked vegetarian dishes. Looking at the dishes on the table, she really felt a little embarrassed. There was no way to have to treat people anything other than vegetarian food since there was no meat at home. Fortunately, there were still a few eggs, so she broke them all and fried them in a pot.
"Brother Du, it's time to eat." Li Suniang shouted at the kitchen door.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Soon Du Wei and Xiao Zihao walked in. At this time, Li Suniang had already served the rice and placed it on the table.
"Brother Du, my cooking skills are not good, please don't despise me!" Li Suniang said, a little embarrassed.
Li Suniang didn't belittle herself. It's true that her cooking skills were not very good. After all, she rarely went into the kitchen in her previous life. Her grandparents cooked at home, and sometimes her parents cooked, and she was mostly responsible for eating.
Of course, she would cook occasionally when she was in the mood, but the taste was imaginable. Although she couldn't cook, she could taste, speak, and command others, and it was quite decent. Not to mention, as long as the family did what she said, the taste was really delicious.
But after coming here, there was no one else who could cook! She couldn't command Xiao Zihao to do it! Since there was no one, she could only do it herself. Fortunately, the original owner still had some cooking skills, and with her memory, she finally made a decent meal, thus avoiding waste.
Du Wei first picked up some scrambled eggs for Xiao Zihao, and then picked up some for Li Suniang's bowl, and then picked up the bowl in front of him and started eating, with no trace of disgust on his face.
How could he dislike it? This was the first thing his wife cooked for him. Even if it wasn't tasty, he would eat it all up to give his wife some face. What's more, the food his wife cooked was really good. At least it was a far cry from his father's.
"Well, it's not bad, much better than what my father cooks." Du Wei said after swallowing the food in his mouth, and then he heard him say, "I'll cook for you when I'm home in the future. My cooking is actually pretty good."
Du Wei was not bragging about himself. His cooking tasted really good. After all, he traveled all over the country and tasted dishes from all over the country. After returning, he would learn to try to cook some of the dishes he liked. Although they were not as delicious as those made by the locals, they were already pretty good. Every time he came home, Lao Du would not go into the kitchen to cook. After all, the food Lao Du cooked could only be said to be cooked.
